To facilitate reference, the agreements on our list are divided into 20 categories by theme. Where appropriate, we have developed hypertext links to external websites containing the texts of these agreements. The Sino-British joint statement consists of eight paragraphs, three annexes on the basic policy regarding Hong Kong, the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group and country leases, as well as the two memoranda of the two sides. The third paragraph lists the basic guidelines of the PRC concerning Hong Kong: this website provides a list of all multilateral agreements in force and applicable to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Most of the agreements on our list applied to Hong Kong before 1 July 1997 (the date of Hong Kong`s reunification with the mainland) and will also apply from that date. Some of these agreements were concluded on 1 July 1997.
According to Article 153, the opinions of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region must be obtained before extending to Hong Kong the international agreements to which China is a party (or becomes a contracting party).
